“Silent Night “
The famous Christmas carol “silent night” was written in three hours on Christmas Eve, 1818, by a parish priest in Austria named Josef Mohr. Earlier that day, Mohr had baptized a baby, and on leaving the christening learned that the church organ had broken down. Fearing that his parishioners would be saddened by the lack of music on Christmas eve, he rushed to the house of a friend Franz Gruber, the church organist. There the two men composed the famous hymn, and at the midnight mass Mohr and Gruber, accompanied by a guitar, sang the carol for the first time.
